Provision of a new higher education facility established by Anglia Ruskin University on the site of Peterborough Regional College.
The individual three storey building was designed to house offices, teaching spaces and a 110 seat Lecture Theatre. The structure was basically ‘L’ shaped in plan with a regular grid of 7.5m by 7.8m to the three storey element containing offices and teaching spaces and an open grid to the Lecture Theatre.
Speed of construction was an important aspect of this development and to facilitate this requirement a steel framed structure comprising simply supported beams off columns and raking steelwork supporting the terraced floor of the Lecture Theatre suspended off the roof structure over with precast floors and stairs was developed allowing much off-site fabrication and manufacture overlapping with site construction activities and promoting a shorter overall construction period compared with an in-situ concrete frame or loadbearing masonry structure.
