“Relationships control the flow of money more than core competencies or deliverables” – Dan Kennedy
With over 30 years of surveying experience I think that the personal touch is as important to client relationships as the final deliverable. The majority of our work is commissioned on a repeat basis from satisfied customers who recognise our professionalism; accuracy and commitment. We work with our clients to provide what they want, but also to seek out that little extra that may provide that small commercial advantage over their competitors.
I am a highly motivated leader, experienced and conscientious engineer and appointed Director of JPP Geotechnical and Environmental at its inception in January 2018. I bring a wealth of experience from various sectors including a wide range of project types from housing to schools, industrial and commercial redevelopments to multi-storey construction within central London and nationwide.
I consider it is key to liaise with clients, contractors and regulators at early stages and even at concept stage to review ground related potential abnormalities that could arise and determine the most cost effective and appropriate investigation strategy. I always like a challenge which the ground can often provide!
With the technical knowledge and experience of the geo team alongside the other JPP disciplines, we strive to provide a comprehensive consultancy service to attain cost effective and sustainable civil engineering solutions.
Outside of work, I have two young children who keep me busy. I enjoy hiking and skiing.Download Lydia Crawford's CV
I joined JPP at the end of October to direct and grow the Structural Engineering services that we offer to our clients. I have a strong background in both civil and structural engineering design and management, with a wide range of client and sector experience. I have over 17 years Chartered experience under my belt, being a Chartered Member of both the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers. My technical ability combined with commitment to finding the ‘best’ solution for projects has held me in good stead for working closely with clients and dealing with challenges pragmatically. I started my career as a designer for civil and structural works within the water industry under traditional Conditions of Contract. With the sea change to Design and Build procurement I developed my technical and managerial skills further working closely for both end client and contractor on a number of projects within Major Rail, Logistics, Manufacturing and Built Environment projects. One highlight of my career was working on the International Broadcasting Centre for the 2012 Olympic Games. It was here that I initially headed up the design for the building foundations and then moved on to control all aspects of the substructure, superstructure and civil engineering aspects of the building, which was published in the Structural Engineering flagship magazine at the time. Having worked at a number of consultancies, ranging in staff numbers, and having overseen multiple discipline teams at various national offices, I have come on board to offer new ideas and generate healthy discussion on the way that JPP can operate to best serve its customers, offering value for money, whilst also maintaining a stable core of technical excellence.Download Rich Leathers's CV
I am a keen and practical engineer, who prides himself on being able to balance the sometimes very scientific side of my profession with other very important factors such as buildability, and not least economy. A strong background in different disciplines gained over my time in the industry means I am able to confidently deal with various aspects of a single scheme, and provide clients with the single point of contact which JPP as a company always aim for.
I am a motivated team leader, passionate about getting others involved in all aspects of engineering. I have the ability to converse with the general public, contractors, clients and other professionals, and clearly explain what issues are being faced and how to resolve them, allowing all parties to draw together to achieve the common goal.Download Mark Turbutt's CV
After joining the practice in 2013 as a Senior Project Engineer, I recently became Associate Director at Smith Foster when we joined the JPP Group in August 2019.

I obtained a degree in Civil engineering from Cardiff University, graduating in 1999 and became a member of the Institute of Structural Engineers in 2008.
I became an Associate in 2019 and am part of the Development Planning team, which has continued to grow over the past few years. My role involves preparing Transport Statements / Assessments, Travel Plans, junction modelling, Flood Risk Assessments and drainage strategies.
I have been a STEM Ambassador since 2016 and represent both JPP and engineering at careers fairs at local schools. I am a member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.
I am an experienced Geotechnical/Geoenvironmental Engineer with a demonstrated history of working in the civil engineering industry. Skilled in site investigation, geotechnical and contaminated land recommendations, remediation, validation etc. I have experience of managing large ground investigation contracts with a large number of engineers and drilling contractors. I joined the JPP family in Northampton as part of their 2007 ‘apprentice’ intake. Starting on the digital drawing board otherwise known as AutoCAD my role developed from the ground up (pun intended) from detailing trench fill foundations for major house builders to conducting design analysis on 3D models for multi-million pound projects in Revit. Experienced in a wide range of sectors I now manage our enthusiastic team in Manchester.
Engineers are often an afterthought, yet our input is pivotal to whether a scheme is physically and or economically viable. Our early appointment can highlight engineering ‘risks’ to a client and provide practical cost saving solutions to these ‘risks’ prior to major time and or major financial investment in a project.
I am always open to discuss projects big or small at any stage of the design process (or even before it begins). I have an excellent relationship with all departments of JPP, so whether you need pre-planning advice, a topographical survey, infrastructure design or structural calculations, I am happy to be your single point of contact throughout the process.
Outside the office I enjoy watching boxing, rugby union and football – although I am yet to decide if Manchester is Red or Blue!
